  • This presentation delves into the intersectionalities of black dyslexic students in America.

Understanding racism, biases, and special education statistics paints the picture of why the school to prison pipeline continues to exists.

It's imperative to educate our teachers in the science of reading, delving into our personal biases with children of color, and understanding how we can better serve our brown and black students to be set up for success.

This presentation will include tons of resources that you can use to target phonological and phonemic awareness skills through books, multi-sensory activities and wordplay.

  • In this session, participants will gain an understanding of the research on spelling and how it impacts orthographic learning and reading achievement.

Following a review of the research and some reflection on the benefits that spelling practices can provide, a description of the implications for instruction and demonstration of spelling practices that align with the research will give participants a clear picture of research-based spelling practices that can be easily implemented in a variety of settings.

  • Are you looking for ways to help your learners improve their fluency?

In this session, you will learn the components of fluency, why fluency matters, how to assess fluency, and most importantly, how to provide targeted instruction for your learners. By the end of this session, you will be able to implement practical fluency strategies that adhere to the Science of Reading.

  • Who says phonics instruction is boring?

In this session you will walk away with numerous fresh ideas and activities on how to make explicit phonics instruction engaging for you students. Each activity can be adapted for different ages and skills!

  • In this session, we will discuss shifts for classroom instruction in school environments that follow balanced literacy.

I will share resources for building solid decoding and spelling foundations and for designing structured literacy small groups to replace classic "guided reading" time.

I will also discuss how to assess students' knowledge from this explicit instruction and re-engage in data-based lessons.

This session is intended for K-2 teachers new to the Science of Reading. The information in this course will be helpful for Tier 1-3 instruction as well as one-one tutoring or even homeschooling parents!
